3 ways to design more consistently
We’re bringing you a blog series filled with 5 design tips to help your business bloom.
Part 1 is kicking off with this: consistency is key.
When it comes to design, consistency is one of the most important parts of creating a brand that is recognisable as YOU. Whether it’s your logo, font and colours, a website, printed materials or social media posts, maintaining consistency is crucial…
Why brand consistency matters
Consistency in design (and wording) is key to establishing trust and recognition with your audience. When you keep your colours, fonts and layouts consistent, it reinforces brand recognition and brand recall.
We have all clicked on a website and stumbled into a space where every page uses a different colour scheme or font and you have no idea who they are or what they stand for - it feels chaotic, unprofessional and not a place you want to browse. Keeping a consistent design makes navigation easier and allows your values and story to take centre stage.
Think- instant recognisability. There are some big brands that everyone can spot instantly just for their colour tone or a font, and why? Because we’ve seen it used the same way over and over again until it becomes so engrained in our subconscious that we don’t even have to think about it anymore. That is so achievable, even in our small ways, just by consistently showing up in the same way time and time again.
💜 Reminder- only YOU see 100% of your content. So even if your designs feel repetitive to you, they’re building familiarity with your audience
Key areas to keep consistent
Colour palette: Choose a set of colours that represent your brand and use them consistently across all design elements.
Typography (fonts): Stick to one or two fonts and use them consistently for headings, body text, and accents. Too many fonts can get confusing!
Spacing & alignment: Consistent margins, padding (space between elements) and spacing in your text, create a clean and organised design.
Imagery & style: Use a consistent style of illustrations, icons, or photos to maintain your visual harmony.
Tone & messaging: Design isn’t just about visuals - your written content also matters! Find your brand’s voice, weave in your business values and who you are, and stick with it.
How to maintain consistency
Create and use brand guidelines: Document your design choices (colours, fonts, how to (and how not to) use your logo, etc.) to keep everything consistent. You can keep referring back to it when you need to, and if you’re collaborating with others, you can easily make sure they keep your branding consistent too.
Use templates: Design a set of templates for social media, presentations and marketing materials to ensure uniformity, and make it easier to batch create. Don’t know where to start? Ask a savvy designer (like me!) to set you up with templates for everything you need. It’ll save you so much time and energy and keep you creating consistently.
It takes time: It takes time to get used to using your designs and branding consistently so you’ll make mistakes along the way. Be kind to yourself when you do- no one is perfect. Regularly review how it’s working for you, and check your designs against your brand guidelines to spot any inconsistencies.
Consistency doesn’t mean boring
Consistency doesn’t mean boring and it doesn’t mean repetitive- it means creating a seamless experience that feels familiar and reliable. Whether you’re working on a personal project or building a brand, staying consistent will elevate your designs and make them more impactful.
Stay tuned for part 2, where we’ll explore another fundamental design principle to take your work to the next level!
